Where the line is
Free is everything the two of you make. Premium is the app's supply of new things: this month's questions, this month's bingo card, every game. Nothing you make is ever behind it, and nothing behind it is ever something you need.
If a subscription lapses, nothing you wrote goes anywhere. Your memories are still there, your notes are still there, your capsules still open on the day they were always going to open, and your export still works. You just stop getting the new packs.
There are no ads, and there never will be. Nobody is buying anything about you, because there is nothing for sale — you are the customer here, which is the whole point of charging for it at all.
Hearts
Hearts are the little currency you spend on decorations for your shared home. You earn them by using the app — answering the question, sending a note, keeping a streak going. A normal week of the two of you being the two of you earns enough to buy something good.
You can buy a pack of hearts if you would rather not wait for a big splurge. It skips a wait, and that is all it does. Hearts never unlock a feature, and there is nothing you can only get by paying for them.
Canceling
Two taps in your App Store settings, the same as everything else on your phone. No survey, no phone call, no offer page trying to talk you out of it. If it stops being worth it, it stops being worth it.
Made by one person
There is no company here and no investors to keep happy. Every email that comes in gets read, and answered, by the person who built the thing — good or bad. That is the reason the free part is as big as it is: nobody upstairs is asking for a bigger number.
